Frequently
Asked Questions:
What
kind of problems can you find with infrared inspection?
Almost all electrical faults will exhibit excess heat. Loose
or deteriorated connections, faulty breakers, overloaded circuits,
load imbalances worn or pitted contactor points, even excess
harmonic patterns on transformer coils can be visualized.
Can the inspection be performed without any service
interruptions?
Almost all electrical equipment has a service interlock that
allows access for inspection without shutting off the power.
Will the inspection be performed during normal working
hours?
All equipment should be inspected while under normal load.
Your facility should be operating normally.
Do the panel covers have to be removed for this inspection?
It is impossible to properly inspect a breaker panel with
the covers or deadfronts installed. We will not inspect any
panel that has its covers in place.
Do you remove/replace the covers?
It is most common that onsite personnel remove/replace the
covers. Certified Infrared can perform this function for a
small additional charge.
How long will the inspection take?
The limiting factor is usually how fast the covers can be
removed/replaced.
What
kind of report can I expect at the end of the inspection?
A full written report detailing all the thermal anomalies
detected with a thermal and full color image for each problem.
Certified Infrared will also recommend repair procedures based
on the severity of the problem and the criticality of the
piece of equipment. You will also receive a full list all
the equipment that was inspected.
Is it important that the thermographer be a licensed
electrician?
A thorough detailed familiarity with the equipment inspected
is paramount to an accurate diagnosis. One week training courses
to “Certify” thermographers cannot substitute for the many
years of experience it takes to obtain a state electrical
contractor’s license. All of our thermographers were licensed
electricians before becoming thermographic electrical inspectors.
If my electrical contractor has an IR camera, can
he do my IR inspection?
Your electrical contractor may or may not be an effective
thermographer. It is always a good idea to use an independent
third party because if your electrical contractor finds a
problem, he is in effect creating his own work and / or certifying
his own repairs. Certified Infrared has no vested interest
in what we find.
